Packaging Rules allow you to set up instructions for automatically adding non-sellable items to orders. These are materials included in the shipment such as packaging supplies, marketing inserts, or coolant that are not sold to the end customer through your online store. Some examples include:
Packaging Materials: 12" Liner A
Packaging Materials: 12" Liner B
Marketing Material: Handle with Care Insert
Coolant: 64oz Gel Pack
Note: If you are shipping with insulated liners, rules need to be added to include the appropriate liner components with each shipping box. An exception to this is if you are sourcing shipping boxes from your 3PL partner and they sell their shipping boxes as a box/liner set.
Instructions:
Once your packaging materials are setup in your Product Catalog, navigate to Rules on the lefthand sidebar of our Dashboard and click the Packaging header:
Click the Create a Rule button (visible in in the screenshot above) to tell our system what circumstances you want applied for specific packaging materials to be added to your packout.
The first two dropdowns on the righthand sidebar provide an enormous range of parameters you can choose to apply for your specific packaging rule(s) to be applied:
Some examples of possible packaging rules you could impose are:
Add 2 Gel Packs when Destination Temp is less than 50 degrees
Add 1 Chicago Deep Dish insert when destination state equals "IL"
Add 1 Promo Card when items count is greater than 10
In the example below, we've entered parameters such that if Coldcart processes an order where the time in transit is less than 2 days, 1 unit of Ice Pack - Small will be included in the packout:
Click Create Rule for the rule to be saved.
Note: you can add layers to your rule by clicking + Add visible in the screenshot above to add an additional circumstance that must exist for your rule to go into effect. An example is below, where we've modified our original rule to now say, "if Coldcart processes an order where the time in transit is less than 2 days, and the order fulfills out of California, 1 unit of Ice Pack - Small will be included in the packout":
You can delete a Rule at any time by simply clicking said rule, then clicking Delete in the righthand sidebar:
Note: To make changes to an existing rule, delete the original rule and recreate it with the updated parameters
To apply a universal rule to all shipments, see instructions in this article.
